College Application Essay: A Topic Mistake

College application essay mistakes are numerous. But this one can be turned into a big positive for the student.

It’s all about turning a negative into a positive. Instead of writing about a topic that admission readers prefer NOT to read, you can have someone else write about it.

For example, you experienced a tragedy, such as a death in the family.  That’s the negative.  So have a teacher write about it. Why? It looks like you transcended the tragedy and moved on with your life without trying to pull at the heart-strings of the reader.  That’s the positive.

This may appear cynical and callous, but admission readers have seen it all; their BS detector is fully engaged. The fact that you never brought up the tragedy makes your application look more objective and you more appealing.
